Art appreciation and photography demonstration at GGC by tmox

I went down to Georgia Gwinnett College to give a photography demonstration to a few art appreciation classes for my friend Carolina. I'm comfortable teaching to students who are already following a photographic course of study but this was my first time in a while teaching to students who aren't generally interested in art. I was a little nervous at first when my thumb drive was not recognized by the GGC institutional windows setup. So much for putting together a slide presentation! I was able to adjust my presentation on the fly, I mostly spoke about my influences in pictorialism and the photo secession movement since I knew they had covered that material already but I also spoke about the new topographic movement and how important it has been to my aesthetic. I showed examples of my personal and commercial work and talked about the camera obscura and demonstrated the principles using my 4x5 view camera while Christian setup my lights. I took a few portraits of the students using Fuji 4x5 instant film and scanned them later at the studio. Hopefully the students like the portraits enough for FB!!

California 2010

I was in California last week with my family. Here are a few photos I took while we were out and about exploring between Los Angeles and San Diego. San Diego was beautiful and the people were super cool. Los Angeles was beautiful in a special kind of way and the people were too cool for school. We had a fun, relaxing time and now I'm ready to get back to work!

We used Amy Weaver's cork collection as a prop for a few wine glass shots for Bloomies. I took these quick edits because I got really into the design and texture of the corks. I love the blush colored staining on the ends as well. Makes me want to drink more wine, for the corks of course.

Mattresses can sometimes be awkward to photograph. At their essence they are an object of utility, not exactly a show piece in the home. Most of us only see our mattress for 5 minutes or so every now and then while we change the linens. However, manufacturers put a lot of thought into the aesthetics of their mattresses and it's my job to showcase that design in an interesting way. For me it's all about showing the texture of the stitching and tufting, that says comfort. Below are a few of my mattress photographs from previous projects that I'm particularly proud of.

Urban Architecture Class - Decatur, GA

I made these photographs while walking around with my Creative Circus students during the golden hours last Saturday in our little enclave Decatur, GA. Their assignment was to photograph local architecture using available light sources. Everyone had a great time exploring parking garages, MARTA, and other structures and the light was great. We all agreed to post our favorites on the class blog Students of Light Here are my contributions.

Cotton Studies

Here is my photograph for my entry into the Seasons show at Young Blood Gallery. Lot's of people grow cotton in rural Georgia and while driving through the farms and fields recently I was reminded of childhood and the onset of the fall. I used to love going to all the festivals celebrating the harvest season, good food, friends, carnival rides. I mean, what more can you ask for?

I picked this cotton from my grandfathers farm a few weeks ago. I figured I was rescuing it from a life of service as a napkin or pair of underwear or something. It's still pretty amazing to me that you plant a seed in the ground and make sure it get's enough water and care and three months later you have food or some other commodity like cotton or sorghum. I wanted to create a piece for the show that reminded people that something like cotton is interesting and beautiful even before it gets converted into the things we are more familiar with like clothing and linens.

I teach lighting to beginning photography students at the Creative Circus in Atlanta. Our last class I had the students photograph each other around my studio using homemade continuous lighting sources. We used household fluorescent and halogen lights purchased at hardware stores along with flashlights, LEDs, and even a rope light used for landscaping. Here are a few portraits of my students that I made to illustrate different portrait lighting techniques.

This stylish young lad is Rick, photographed outside at night illuminated by a light inside my studio. This was a good illustration of use of a single light and the key triangle. Thanks Rembrandt!

This is Channel photographed against my studio roll up door. She always looks great even when she's mad at me! Here I'm trying to illustrate the use of simple, compelling backgrounds.

I'm stoked to be included in this year's Seasons show at Young Blood gallery. The opening is at the YB Gallery here in Atlanta on December 5th. Each artist submits a piece of work based on one of the seasons of the year. I chose my favorite, autumn. I love the crisp air and clear skies mixed with fall color and the urban landscape. Some of the most trashed areas in Atlanta can look oddly beautiful when accented by strikingly warm earth tones. This is my inspiration as I finish my piece. More to come on that soon...

The school specializes in teaching the commercial arts; photography, graphic design, art direction, copy writing, and interactive development. Hey ya'll! I just got back from a portrait workshop in San Miguell de Allende, Mexico with Frank Ockenfels 3. The class was called "Looking Beyond the Obvious" and was focused on searching for a interesting moment with your subject and finding and/or creating light for the photograph. We were urged to experiment and try to find interesting and unconventional perspectives for our subjects. Please leave me a comment and let me know what you think.

I made these portraits of my friend and awesome illustrator Dave Cook last weekend. He needed a few promo images as well as stuff for editorial content and his website idrawmonsters.com
He has a fun personality so we made sure not to keep the mood too serious and focus on shots that were fun and crazy. I think you can tell when we started listening to Sabbath at high volume.

I saw The Preakness and the Selmenairs at the Sight 4 sore eyes benefit for Crystal Woods last night at the Earl. Crystal needs to have cornea replacement to the tune of $10,000 per eye. Yikes! She will be completely blind in less than a year if she doesn't get it. Hopefully they raised a few grand for her last night.

As a photographer, photographing yourself can be a narcissistic dream
or a self loathing nightmare. All of your imperfections are exposed
and it really makes it hard to know when a shot is good or not. Some
of us, photographers that is, are not as photogenic as the models we
work with. That's when photo friends can really help out. Myself and
photographers Brian Woodcock and Greg Dupree got together at my studio
yesterday for a headshot photo shoot exchange where we spent the day
making each others portraits.
